History
Founded in 1964 by Dr. and Mrs. David Weinberg, Brookfield Academy was the first Montessori school in Michigan. Its innovative early childhood methods and curriculum attracted the attention of parents from a wide geographic area.
Brookfield Academy has had a long history of educational excellence, offering a unique and progressive program of learning for children and is well known today as one Michigan’s premiere private schools.
Brookfield Academy initially began as Laurel Montessori, a preschool in Drayton Plains, Michigan. Through the support and interest of families, it soon added lower elementary (ages 6–9) and upper elementary (ages 9–12). Over time, continued interest and need from parents and the community led to more classrooms, eventually resulting in the addition of campuses in West Bloomfield, Troy, and Rochester Hills.
In 2003, Brookfield’s founders decided to retire and searched for new ownership that would preserve the Montessori program and high standards of academic excellence. Today, Brookfield Academy’s campuses are operated by Bright Horizons Family Solutions, the world's leading provider of employer-sponsored child care, back-up care, early education, and work/life solutions.
Our Program
The Montessori program at Brookfield Academy is based on the work of Maria Montessori and affiliated with the American Montessori Society (AMS). Children develop at their own pace in a carefully prepared environment and under the guidance of trained Montessori teachers. The distinctive Montessori environment appreciates beauty, the natural world, and child-scaled furnishings to create a wonderful learning experience for children in our Montessori programs.
Our Classrooms
Within our multiage classrooms, children are grouped according to their ability to learn in each subject area. In these small academic groups of six to eight, children master each step in a sequence of skills and units of information.
Children’s House (three to six years), Lower Elementary (six to nine years) and Upper Elementary (nine to eleven years) programs are offered.
Our Faculty
The Children's House classrooms have one certified Montessori teacher and two trained assistants.
